(Taipei, Taiwan – March 10, 2009) As more and more network communications and security applications are moving to the appliance-based delivery method, the software industry is increasingly looking for cost-effective platforms from which to deliver their solutions.
Lanner Electronics, a leading designer and ODM manufacturer of advanced network communications platforms, today announced the release of two new appliance platform models aimed at the high-end enterprise market segment, but at a midrange price.
“Lanner’s extensive integration expertise and many years of experience as one of the world’s leading suppliers of network appliance hardware have led to the development of two very high performance appliance platforms that are accessible to the mid-range enterprise network application market,” said Jesse Chiang, Lanner Network Communications Product Planner. “The server-grade 5000 and 5100 chipsets along with such a large number of network interface options enables faster, more efficient and more robust application delivery, resulting in better performance for our customers’ solutions, and better return on their customers’ investments.”
Lanner’s two new Xeon network appliance platforms, the FW-8881 and FW-9991, are designed as power and performance-optimized x86 hardware platforms for a range of enterprise-class network security applications such as gateway antivirus, firewall, unified threat management (UTM), and intrusion detection and prevention.
Two hot-swappable 3.5” hard drive trays provide convenient and scalable storage. High availability features include redundant power supplies, modularized hardware components and software configurable fail-over and fail-through bypass options. Both appliance platforms also offer an optional embedded Cavium Nitrox security coprocessor for offloading compute-intensive security tasks.
Both systems provide the power of two dual-core or quad-core Intel Xeon CPUs in a 2U rackmount chassis – the FW-8881 built on the Intel 5100 chipset and the FW-8891 built on the Intel 5000 chipset. They both also fit in the same modular chassis, which offers four GbE network ports standard plus two customizable network modules, providing a wide range of different speed, interface and bypass options – up to a maximum 20 copper and fiber Ethernet ports.
Lanner also released a new 8-port network module for these high end platforms, the IG802A, which provides eight copper GbE ports with bypass support. In total, Lanner now offers nine different network modules in different configurations for the FW-8881 and FW-8891 appliance platforms.
The Lanner FW-8881 and FW-8891 are available today. For more information, contact a Lanner representative via email at
